Magda Linette leads the head to heads 3-2, albeit Qiang Wang won the last two meetings. Incidentally, those matches took place between 2014 and 2018!

In the live ranking chart, Linette is currently ranked 66. At her peak in February 2020, she reached a career-high 33. In comparison, Qiang Wang was (September 2019) once ranked 12. However, over the past two years, she dropped outside the top 100, and she will start today at 123.

Interestingly, the Pole preferred this tournament rather than staying at home in Warsaw. Consequently, the more suitable hard-court surface was the deciding factor.

Linette won her first two matches against Mertens and Tomova. In the first of them, the 30 year old needed 2:06 (court time) and three sets to beat her higher-ranked opponent. In brief, Magda was more consistent, and she was at her best in returning serve and movement around the court.

For the record, Linette won four career titles on hard court. One of them was the 2019 Bronx Open in New York, while the other was Hua Win (2020). She also made the final of the Japan Open and in the South Korean Open.

Meanwhile, Wang didn’t play much tennis in 2021 & 2021. In fact, after winning four FED cup matches in March 2020, she didn’t reappear until January 2021. While the Chinese player lasted a bit longer last year, she didn’t play after the Tokyo Olympics.

For the most part, Wang is back on schedule with this year’s 23/18, although 9 of those wins came in qualifying! On a positive note, the 30-year-old won 4 matches here, with the ones in the main round being against Peterson and Jakupovic.

To make a long story short, Linette is the most likely winner. She’s in good form this week, and she’s advantaged by playing two matches less.
