NEWBURY 3:00 KING’S GAMBIT 4/1

Thirteen runners are going to post for this quality 3-year-old handicap!

One that should go well at double-figure odds is the Richard Hannon-trained PERSICA. On his seasonal debut, the son of NEW BAY was a 2.5L 3rd to subsequent 2000 Guineas winner NOTABLE SPEECH. A mark of 92 is workable, and switching to turf isn’t an issue!

The Gosden’s trained FIGHTER COMMAND holds a Group Two entry. However, while he’s fairly treated (84), nothing suggests the son of DUBAWI will be capable of reaching that level.

While I’m not against betting runners from the Alan King stable, the Banbury Castle trainer is expensive to follow. For the record, if you had bet all the yards runners using level stakes at the starting price, your return on investment would be -33.5%. In short, that alone is enough to put me off BRIONI

The early favourite CHANTILLY represents top connections, and he won his last race with a bit to spare. Since the son of GALILEO is entered in bigger races, he should be able to reach a mark of 95. With that said, the colt might prefer softer!

GOODWOOD ODYSSEY is going the right way, and last time out he benefitted from stepping up to this distance. While a 7-pound penalty is fair enough, this race is better than the one he won!

While he’s got a bit to prove, I must admit to being partly tempted by SPIRIT OF AKLAM. The Mick & David Easterby’s colt is progressing nicely, and he will be well handled by Joanna Mason. My only negative is he’s a bit high in the handicap, whereas the selection could be thrown in!

On that note, I’m going big on KING’S GAMBIT. The Harry Charlton-trained son of SAXON WARRIOR progressed from race to race last season. The extra distance is a positive, and getting William Buick to ride is a positive. With conditions in his favour, covering this mark of 93 shouldn’t be a problem.
