KATERINA SINIAKOVA vs QINWEN ZHENG

When these players met in the first-round of last years Wimbledon, Katerinia Siniakova beat Qinwen Zheng(6/3 7/6) in straight sets. In London, conditions were tough (windy), and the difference on the day was Siniakova playing a more pragmatic game. In there other meeting at this years Miami, Zheng progressed past the Czech player. However, Siniakova was injured during that match, and at 1-1 sets she retired.

In yesterday’s opening match against Naomi Osaka, Zheng banged down a season high of 23 aces against Osaka’s five. The Chinese player went on to win 6/4 3/6 6/3 in a time of 2:11. While the 21 year old managed to get the better of her opponent, the difference on the day was her big serve!

If we take a look at the overall stats of Zheng, we see she only won 47% of her grass matches. Moreover, she was 0/3 last season, and she doesn’t always convince on this surface!

The first thing to say about Siniakova is she’s an excellent returner of serve. The number one doubles player will know were to position herself, and it’s that which will put added pressure on Zheng!

The 28 year old arrived here on a career-high rank of 30, and her last 11 matches on grass ended with 9 wins. Siniakova is the reigning champion at the up and coming tournament in Bad Homburg, and she managed that by beating the likes of Liudmila Samsonova, Emma Navarro and Lucia Bronzetti!

Siniakova qualified by easily winning her two matches, and since then she’s beaten Navarro in the first round proper. All her wins this week were impressive, and she heads into today’s match looking in a good place!

With a big scalp up for grabs, we trust Siniakova to get past her higher-ranked opponent.
