PEYTON STEARNS vs TATJANA MARIA

Peyton Stearns is having a great week! The 21-year-old started Bogota on a career-high rank of 116. By making the final of this tournament, the American progressed to rank 88. For the record, a win today would move Stearns to rank 74.

While Peyton is still making the transition to the main tour, her 24/5 YTD (year to date) suggests she’s ready to establish herself. In fact, season wins against Katie Boulter, Rebeka Masarova and Rebecca Peterson support that theory.

With that said, Stearns needed three sets to get past her last two opponents. Furthermore, in yesterday’s match, she benefitted from Kamilla Rakhimova going AWOL. After taking the first set (6/3), the Russian started to lose focus and Peyton took advantage.

Meanwhile, Tatjana Maria is the reigning title holder in Bogota, and she’s won all her four matches in straight sets. As could be expected, the 35-year-old made short work of Katrina Scott, Carolina Alves, and Nuria Brancaccio. And, in the last round, she didn’t allow the rain breaks to stop her progress against Francesca Jones.

The working mother of two clearly prioritized this tournament. Age doesn’t seem to be a barrier, and making the QF of last year’s Wimbledon must have given her a massive confidence boost!

To cut a long story short, Maria has much more experience at this level. She’s enjoying her tennis and the crowd will be behind her. More importantly, we would make the German favorite, and the bookmakers disagree!
