EKATERINA ALEXANDROVA vs YULIA PUTINTSEVA
Despite being around for a while, this pairing never met on the court! For the record, Ekaterina Alexandrova starts today at rank 18, which compares to a career-high of 16. In comparison, Yulia Putintseva was ranked 27 in October 2020, and she’s now down at 45.
Alexandrova is 7/7 on the YTD (year to date), and her best effort was reaching last week’s QF in Miami. At that tournament, the 28-year-old claimed the scalps of Taylor Townsend, Belinda Bencic, and Bianca Andreescu.
At her best, the Russian can play some excellent tennis. However, she lacks consistency, and the way she lost to Petra Kvitova (Miami) was down to her late-match mood swing.
If we go back to last year, Alexandrova beat both Karolina Pliskova and Magda Linette on her way to the SF of this tournament. She then went on to reach the same stage as Madrid and ended the clay season on a solid 13/5.
Ekaterina’s win rate on clay is 62.9%, which is in line with her average strike rate of 63.1%. The question remaining is which Alexandrova will we see today?
As for Yulia Putintseva, she’s another WTA player who lacks consistency. Nevertheless, the Moscow-born player won $2 million prize money more than her opponent, and she’s on her favourite surface.
In fact, Putintseva won 64.4% of her matches on clay, which compares favorably with her overall 57.3%. Furthermore, she’s won tournaments in Nurnberg and Budapest, and she’s 16/7 on this surface over the last year.
Yulia came from a set down to beat first-round opponent Elina Svitolina. In the 2nd part of that match, she was playing her best tennis for some time!
One tool Putintseva could use effectively is her drop shot. She executed that part of her game against Svitolina, and Alexandrova isn’t as nimble as the Ukrainian.
This match will be decided on two factors, namely mood, and execution. With a first-round win under her belt, these odds about Putintseva are interesting!
