2022 was supposed to be Alize Cornet’s final season. However, after making the quarter-final of Melbourne and the 4th round of Wimbledon, the now 33-year-old decided to put retirement on hold.
Cornet started the new season with a win over Maria Lourdes Carle, but since then she lost her other three matches. For the record, all of Donna Vekic (6/4 6/3), Elisabetta Cocciaretto (6/4 6/2), and Leylah Annie Fernandez (7/5 6/2) beat her in straight sets.
As a consequence of her first-round exit at the Australian Open, Cornet dropped to rank 58. In comparison, she reached a season-high 31 in 2022, and a career-high 11 in 2009.
The French player won just 48.1% of her indoor matches, which compares to an average win rate of 53.2%. Furthermore, her record in Lyon is poor, with first-round exits on her last two visits here.
Throughout the last campaign, Maria Camila Osorio Serrano often struggled with injuries. In fact, she was only able to play 19 tournaments, and on three occasions she was out for more than a month.
Whether MCOS is over her niggles remains to be seen. Nevertheless, we know that the tenacious Columbian can play!
During the last season, Osorio Serrano beat players such as Alexandrova, Parrizas-Diaz, and Svitolina. In April, she reached a career-high rank of 33, and a year earlier went 35-17.
While Maria doesn’t have much experience playing indoors, she’s got the baseline game to suit Lyon. Moreover, she arrived early and she will be up for the challenge ahead.
