WTA TENNIS SEASON STARTS WITH TWO PICKS FOR FREE
XINYU WANG vs YULIA PUTINTSEVA: AUCKLAND
In November 2023, Xinyu Wang peaked at a career-high rank of 32. The 22-year-old ended the last season with a 37/24, of which she was 32/17 on hard-court.
Xinyu won a minor (W100) tournament in Landisville, and she reached the semi-final of two WTA 250 tournaments in Hua Hin and Osaka. With that said the Chinese player’s biggest prize money came from reaching the 4th round of the US Open.
As for Yulia Putintseva, the 29-year-old won 34 of her 62 matches. However, despite hauling more wins in 2023 than in the previous 7 years, her rank slipped to a lowly 66. At her peak, the player repressing Kazakhstan reached rank 27 in October 2020.
If we go back to the 2019 and 2020 seasons, Putintseva did particularly well at end-of-season tournaments. By starting her campaign earlier than normal, we can imagine Yulia being best prepared for the challenge ahead and a win today is on the cards!
BET: YULIA PUTINTSEVA
DAYANA YASTREMSKA vs DARIA SAVILLE: BRISBANE
While we have to go back to the 2019 and 2020 seasons, Daria Saville won both previous meetings with Dayana Yastremska!
Following a few seasons in the doldrums, Yastremska did at least record a 39/29 in 2023. The Ukrainian power-player reached an SF in Reus and in August she went all the way at a 125 Challenger in Kozerki (Poland).
As for playing in Brisbane, the 23-year-old started the new campaign with straight-set qualifying wins over Su-Wei Hsieh and Yulia Starodubtsewa. The question now is can she follow up in the main tournament?
Saville received a wild card for her home tournament, thus the world number 204-ranked player was saved from the need to qualify.
To be fair, the 29-year-old Australian lost ranking points because she missed the best part of two years. Nevertheless, there was a lot to like about last year’s comeback, and she should be better prepared for the challenge ahead.
As a former number 20 ranked player with a 2-0 head-to-head lead, we have to give the betting outsider the benefit of the doubt. While the carrot of +4 games would give a bit of insurance, we prefer taking our chance on the outright.
BET: DARIA SAVILLE
