ANN LI vs MARIA CAMILA OSORIO SERRANO
In the final of last year’s Tenerife, Ann Li beat Maria Camila Osorio Serrano. In fact, the now 22-year-old had no problems winning 6/1 6/4.
Li closed 2021 with a QF in Courmayeur, and she started 2022 by making the SF of a WTA250 in Melbourne. However, since then she struggled with a shoulder injury, and her YTD is a moderate 10/12.
Since playing Australia, Li’s best performance was making the 3rd round of Miami. Following that she missed 7-weeks before reappearing in Paris. Unfortunately, at that tournament Li was forced to retire at a set-up against Van Uytvanck. Subsequently, Ann played the grass season, but the best she could do was to make the second round in London.
At the time of writing, the U.S. player’s rank slipped to 66. On her last visit to New York, she was beaten by Kristina Kucova. On a more positive note, in 2020 she made it to the third round by beating Alison Riske. Furthermore, her win rate on a hard court is a solid 62.8%, and she’s beaten the likes of Kontaveit, Kenin and Cornet.
As for Maria Camila Osorio Serrano, she too took time out with a thigh injury. Nevertheless, it didn’t stop her from making the final of a hard-court tournament in Monterrey and the SF of Bogota.
While the Columbian won just one of her last nine matches, she’s had some really tough draws. For the record, the 20-year-old arrives here on the back of losing in the first round of Cleveland to Sorribes Tormo. Nevertheless, she took the Spaniard to three sets, and in Washington she made Raducanu play two tie breaks.
We believe MCOS will improve on her recent efforts, and this match is winnable.
