SLOANE STEPHENS vs BEATRIZ HADDAD MAIA
While we have to go back to 2019, Beatriz Haddad Maia won the only meeting between these two players. Incidentally, that was in the 2nd round of Acapulco, in which the Brazilian won 6/3 6/3.
During that same year, Haddad Maia closed out with a solid 30/17. What followed was a 27/2 in 2020. Indeed, while that was an excellent strike rate, she bettered that with a 77/25 in 2021.
Subsequently, Haddad Maia progressed to playing in the top tournaments, and in 2022 she ended the campaign with a solid 53/23. To cut a long story short, the 27-year-old reached a career-high rank of 10 in June of this year!
For the record, Beatriz starts this tournament at rank 19. While she’s slipped a little in the ranking chart, she still reached the 4th round of London and the semi-final in Paris.
As for Sloane Stephens, she won 24 of her 41 matches this year. The highlight of the 30-year-old’s season was winning a clay tournament in St Malo, and reaching the semi-final of Rabat.
Sloane progressed through the two opening matches at her last three tournaments in Montreal, Cincinnati, and Cleveland. However, one of those was by courtesy of Victoria Azarenka withdrawing, and she was stopped in straight sets by Rybakina, Vondrousova, and Sorribes Tormo.
For the most part, Sloane can be happy with her form coming into the US Open. Nevertheless, if we are being analytical, the 30-year-old is a long way below her career-high rank of 3.
In fact, her rank of current rank of 38 feels about right, and we feel like she’s there for the taking!
