LEYLAH FERNANDEZ vs EKATERINA ALEXANDROVA
Having made the final of Cleveland, Ekaterina Alexandrova would have been disappointed not to have collected the trophy.
After taking the first set Alexandrova seemed to be in a good position to win the top prize. However, she lost focus, and Sara Sorribes Tormo was able to psych her out!
As it stands, the 28-year-old is 28/16 this year. Ekaterina won a grass tournament in Hertogenbosch, and she started the week at rank 20. Incidentally, that’s just four places below her career-high rank of 16.
One of the issues we have with the Russian is she tends to lose her confidence easily. In fact, she often beats herself, and it doesn’t take long for her demeanor to change.
Furthermore, Alexandrova’s lowest strike rate is on hard court. Indeed, she wins just 56.1% on this surface, and that compares to an overall average of 63.2%. For the record, Alexandrova never made it past the 2nd round of the US Open.
Meanwhile, Leylah Fernandez is a former finalist in New York. For those not aware, in 2021 she was beaten in an all teenager final by Emma Raducanu.
Earlier on in that tournament, the Canadian knocked out Ana Konjuh, Kaia Kanepi, Naomi Osaka, Angelique Kerber, Elina Svitolina, and Aryna Sabalenka.
While Fernandez hasn’t been able to build on those endeavors, at least she’s back playing her best tennis. As a matter of fact, Leylah is 27/19 this year. She recently beat Haddad Maia in Montreal and followed up with a QF in Cleveland.

In conclusion, Fernandez ticks the course & distance box. Also, she’s got the resilient type of game which will frustrate her opponent. Getting beat in the final of Cleveland wouldn’t have done much for Alexandrova’s confidence. Finally, the Russian struggles at the US Open, and hard-court is her worst surface!
