XINYU WANG vs ANASTASIA POTAPOVA
Following last week’s quarter-final win in Hamburg, Anastasia Potapova peaked at a career-high rank of 59. For the record, the Russian won 60% of her forty matches this year, albeit she’s just 6/7 on hard court.
Potapova is a former junior number one who won Wimbledon girls champions in 2016. After breaking through onto the main tour in 2018, many expected the now 21-year-old to rise the ranks. However, her effort petered out, and in 2019 she struggled to a 27/25. Since then, the Russian’s YTD was 11/6 in 2020, and a negative 21/23 last year.
Meanwhile, Potapova won this year’s clay tournament in Istanbul. On hard court, her best effort was making the QF of last year’s Dubai, in which she beat Keys and Bencic.
On close inspection, Anastasia is ‘’hit & miss’’. Some of the players who beat her (Wurth, Kulikova and Grabher) would have been big odds! Furthermore, after winning Istanbul, she failed badly in her next 6 tournaments.
In the meantime, Xinyu Wang returned from a month’s break to be knocked out in the first round of Palermo. Nevertheless, that match was on clay and she’s clearly better playing hard court.
In 2021, the now 20-year-old made the semi-final of this tournament. She then went on to make the final of Columbus, and a QF in Linz. During that same season, Wang beat players such as Raducanu, Zhang (twice), Maria and Bondar!!
On this surface, Wang must have a good chance!
