SWITZERLAND SUPER LEAGUE

The market is disrespecting reigning champions FC Zurich!

While many will consider it a fluke, the fact is FCZ won last season’s Super League by a whopping 14 points. Moreover, they finished 16 points in front of Young Boys, and it could have been more if they wished! For the record, Zurich won their last three matches against YBB and amongst them was a 1-2 in this stadium.

The challenge for the visitors is to do the same again with a new manager. Former Austria national coach Franco Foda took over from the departing Andre Breitenreiter, and he’s inherited a strong squad.

In fact, with Champions League football looming, FCZ didn’t need to sell any players. Hence, those leaving the club went on free transfers, and they were replaced by seven other players. Incidentally, FCZ paid €500k to Trinity Zlin for Cheick Conde.

From the 2017/18 season to 2020/21, Young Boys won all four championships. Consequently, during that period YBB dominated Swiss football, and they won the league by a wide margin.

However, under last season’s new manager David Wagner things went badly wrong, and they could only finish 3rd in the table. Incidentally, that means the hosts will be playing Europa League qualification, and no lucrative Champions league this time around!

As a result, YBB has had to balance the books, and during the closed season, the club profited €12M from player sales. Raphael Nicky is the new head coach, and the 45-year-old starts with a 30-man squad.

We won’t be swayed by YBB’s moderate results in recent friendlies. Nevertheless, despite the advantage of playing on their own artificial pitch, we are failing to understand these odds!
